Hey everyone!

Ok, time for some backdated entry. A few weeks back I set up an on site photo studio to extend Ardent's professional services to the Aikido Shudokan Malaysia (ASM). Their website can be found here.

As you can see, I brought in two studio lights with me on the set. The reason why I decided to do an on-site shoot is simply because of the size of the action and the flexibility that you can only get at a large set. The only problem is the background which requires at least 2-3 sets of photography paper which costs easily above RM400+ which wasn't that practical.

Anyway the shoot started at around 2pm (set up began at 12pm) and ended around 8pm.. non stop..  but that's how life is on a studio set.. and like in a typical studio set, the client or in this case the Technical Director Sensei Ramlan and co-Technical Director Sensei Ken will provide me with the general idea on what they want.. and I'll use my photography mojo to achieve what they want.. of course I'll give feedback like ok this pose, the face isn't that appealing and we'll strike a well balance compromise between what looks good and what the image should portray.

Above are all the technical directors analysing the 'models' to ensure that their form are all right and proper for the camera.

All of these off studio shots are taken without any flash (to not prematurely trigger the studio lights) thus the photos may not be up to our standard but is shown here just to highlight the behind the scene of the studio shoot.

Yup, that's me in action.. that fella really looks like in pain..

Ah.. a POV (point of view) angle shot..

Not to be vain (I'm sure those who knows me might say otherwise), I love this photo simply because it shows the busy studio with me being at the centre of attention.. a calm element among a busy environment type of feel..  Kudos to Jacky in taking this shot..

Hey, we @ Ardent knows how to have some fun as well, no need to serious right?  Tongue out kinda scary when all these fellas can just kill you with their pinky finger.. Cool

      Awww.. a sweet moment..

Now back to the topic of fusion of what the client wants and Ardent's photography mojo.. Ok the shot below, the client basically wants to have a proper form and the person being thrown should be vertical in the air.. So this all bores down to timing of the shot which isn't that big of an issue. So now, what I added in was simply to break away from convention of freezing both in action which to Ardent is basically a dead type of shot.. there is no life nor energy in a action frozen shot..

So fusing with the client's requirements, I placed a slight blur to the person being thrown as shown below. With that slight blurring, it shows motion while maintaining sharp focus on everything else..  In the end, what we have is a photo that is filled with energy, beauty and form.

Needless to say the client was really happy with the photos. All in a days work here @ Ardent..

Hey guys and gals!

As in my previous post, on the 10th of September 2009, Robinsons @ The Gardens Mid Valley celebrated their 2nd Anniversary and of course, they employed Ardent's photography services to capture the essence of the event.

I would like to start of by thanking Robinsons for sharing their precious event with us. I hope that Ardent can extend our photography services for many many events to come.

The photos are actually up but its on Ardent's private gallery and not in the public portfolio for the time being. It'll be transfered after a week so do check back for it. Of course it won't consist of the entire collection but a subset of it.

Below are just some preview photos of the event. As you see, we @ Ardent don't just take images, we tell stories with it. With that in mind, each photo needs to have an art direction to express the mood of the different stages of the event.

First we start of with the entrance of the pre-event preparation area. Its of course a private area (one of the perks of being the official photographer Cool, its part of the job to go behind the scenes).

There was a large window that brought in huge amounts of sunlight. Great for the Shu Uemura make up artists but to  photographers. Its tricky, very tricky. But then again, its part and parcle of the job, so no whining on Ardent's part there. I wanted a picture of the make up process and wanted to use the sun light as the primary light. With that vision in mind, the below image was taken. The sunlight hits the side of her face but not overly done until you can't distinctively see the outlines of her face. Of course I timed it right when the person at the back with the black shirt was standing right behind her. This shirt gave the necessary contrast especially on that sun lit area.  A studio shoot would have been even more perfect but this is taken as is, so a lot of it bores down to luck as no matter how skillful you are as a photographer, without that 'moment', it means for nothing.

To capture the essence of the moment and couple that with Ardent's ability to take natural, balanced and creative images,  you'll get a shot like below. The shot below shows the calm and relaxed atmosphere during the pre-event stage, a model waiting for her hair to be done (notice those hair clips) quietly using the idle time to read a book and mixing it with a bit of Ardent magicical lighting and angle, further brings out the subject. The shot below was taken with the 105mm Nikkor f/2.8 lens.

Coming to the next image, I wanted an image that showcases the size of Robinsons (spanning 3 floors) and the crowd lining up to go in.

The image below is what visual tension is all about, horizontal lines at the background gives way to vertical and diagonal lines on the paper bag.

The crowd on that day was immensely long, stretching from Robinsons main entrance right close to reaching Isetan on the other end. The problem in taking a photo of the end of this long queue is that it serves no connection to Robinsons. Yes, you'll see a long queue but for what? such picture on its own serves little but was also taken as per client's request to take a picture at the end of the queue. The client is always right, right?.. RIGHT!

Anyway, I'd prefer taking a shot like below. The sea of heads all looking towards Robinsons, all blurred except for the Robinsons signage, taken in portriat form, gives a natural flow into the image.

Ah.. and of course part of my job is to take close up of the models. These models are modeling the handbags and assesories hence I took this half body shot that showcases just that. Nothing spectacular but this gal here had one of the sweetest smiles of all the models that day and of course she smiled at me all the time, which gets her 1 gold star .. Cool

And of course, the Fashion Show..

Below is the shot of the finale, where all the models take their final post up the platform.

The fashion show was hosted by Marion Caunter with the top 4 model contestant from a local reality show, gracing the catwalk. Below are the top 4 model contestant having their photos taken.

That's about it for this round. Will try to find time to post more later.

Hey everyone!

Posting up another opening for Twins Sport now in Kajang..  Here are some of the snippets of what was taken.. the rest of this portfolio is already up and running on our porfolio site..

Now the picture below is one took one helluva dedication my part as I had to brave the loud firecracking sounds while I patiently wait to squeeze a shot as the shot taken below.. I wanted to project the firecracker in action type of photo and thus with the sparks flying around emphasise the effect..

Actually, this shot was meant to provide an intimiate view of the details of the lion's head.. and of course the nice reflection which includes me in the centre.. Cool

Later, we had some VIP guest national shuttlers Lee Wan Wah, Chan Chong Ming and Chew Choon Eng having 2 friendly matches with one partnering former world No 5 doubles champion and co-owner of Twins Sport Kajang..

Photography as I've said many times before is all in the timing..  the shot below was taken with one single shot and not in any burst machine gun mode.. Even with the shot below, there will be a split second in which Lee Wan Wah slows greatly in mid air while awaiting the shuttle to reach the critical smashing zone.. and in this time is which the shot below was taken..

Do remember not to use any flash photography as it is very distracting to the players and of course unprofessional..

The shot below is taken with a f/2.8, 125msec @ 14mm with an ISO of 1600 .. This is unfortunately the max that it can go unless I opt for a D3 and I can push one further stop thanks to its ISO3200 and probably get the shot when Lee Wan Wah makes that critical contact with the shuttle... To be honest, I doubt even with a 250msec shutter speed is possible, these national players use their rackets like whips, maybe 500msec.. anything slower will just be a blur..

So the shot below is what the best can be done short of being in a Studio set up..

That's all for now, feel free to browse the portfolio section for some of our other events that we covered.. I'll post more up when I get the time..

Hey everyone!

These are some of the backlog projects done way back in June that I didn't have time to publish up but its all up and running.. here are some of the pictures here but do view the rest in our portfolio section here or the non flash porfolio here. Below are the pictures of the Twins Sport USJ19 Badminton Centre opening.

The above picture was my artistic interpretation to highlight the date of the event. With the flow of shuttlecocks providing a flow towards the circled date which also creates depth to the image while a slight photoshop to brighten the red circled date to further emphasise it.

The above image, I wanted to create a feeling of spaciousness of the hall as well as creating a 3D feeling of realism to the image. This was also created to help provide 'usable' images to our client, for them to use these type of images for their advert needs. We @ Ardent look to not only record the event but to also think of images that clients can use.

The crowd in the hall after completion of the under 18 doubles tournament awaiting the prize giving ceremony. Have a great weekend ahead!

Hey guys and gals!

How's everyone doing? Hope 09 has been treating you with goodies ya! We @ Ardent ended March with the launching of  'Flight of Green Fairy'.. Abstinthe babeh! @ Werner's On Changkat.. located along Jalan Changkat Bukit Bintang.. TWE Enterprise did all Malaysians a favour in bringing in Absinthe.. until yesterday I thought it was still banned in the UK but it got lifted a few years back.. wheee!

Originated in Switzerland.. I guess when the whole world was so into starting wars and such, our good swiss friends just went the happy booze way.. which wasn't all that bad.. with an alcohol content ranging from 45% - 75%.. yeah 75% babeh.. the only legal alcohol drink that has a warning, do not consume more than 3 shots of any one time.. hhhmm.. don't drink and drive ya!

We were guests of Ben Ng ... that mixologist dude who's hell bent in making me a bankrupt, one shot at a time..  anyway we were there early at 5.30pm to take some pre-event shots of the place..

Anyway, to cut a long story short, we got to meet a few familiar faces such as Sugu from Zeta Bar KL.. We got to meet Vincent and Michelle Loh.. really fun, friendly and down to earth.. Eva.. the boyfriend gal who made that lovely gift (a collection of informative and creatively designed cards, tied with a string along with a tiny bottle containing .. you guessed it.. Absinthe..) , Felicia.. the gal whom initially performed a 'tarik harga' routine... 'aiya a lot of photographers to choose.. I get back to you...' then later.. she's like in every other picture.. aiya headache la to photoshop.. hehhe Cool

Of course, not forgetting Timothy as well as Keith..  what can I say.. not much especially after Kieth started the conversation with 'I got this back room' which probably didn't mean anything but after Absinthe, it just felt so wrong.. in the end, we got to know that the room is white.. mostly thanks to Kieth.. all we ended up was informing Kieth that he might have missed a spot on the ceiling.. keep trying dude! winners aren't quitters ya! hahahhaa Cool  (I've a feeling I'll so get poisoned by my next drink from this dude!)

Andreas.. of course.. the charming dude from Werner.. thanks for welcoming and making us feel at home.. you got an amazing place!

Finally, congratulations to TWE's team in making this event a success.. maybe next time Ardent can be an official part of it as well Cool  You guys and gals conducted your roles professionally, payed close attention to the finer details, passionate and above all, Jacky and I left the place feeling deeply honored to have met all of you.. whom if I maybe so bold, to call my friends..

I hope to see all of you in the near future.. In the mean time, as a snippet of what went down that night, here are some of the pictures.. the rest can be viewed at our profile gallery located here ..

Hey guys and gals!

How's everyone's 09 been? We @ Ardent sincerely wishes everyone all the best ya!

I just manage to get a small window of time to publish the photos taken during Bauyen's dinner gathering to celebrate her marriage last December 2008.. The dinner is held at Jarrod & Rawlins at Damansara Heights..

With respect to our client, the photos can only be released now after receiving the green light from her.

So please do enjoy the pictures where the bulk of the photos are in the work section of this site here for your viewing pleasure. I've enclosed a small preview images below of the event.

Kekkee.. Fui Yen showing up late VIP style and getting a healthy dose of Bauyen's wrath.. dun play play wei!

The groom needs to find his wife just by elbow identification! touch touch touch.. hhmm.. touch some more.. if you look at the full album under the work section, all I can say is that the gal in the blue dress tried later to be more aquainted with her own albow..  pictures do speak a thousand words.. Wink

In another rare moment, the photographer got his picture taken.. everyone in the photo are my school mates from Sekolah Menegah Damansara Utama batch of 1997.

That's Bauyen's French hubby being swamped by intoxicated Malaysian females.. ain't sure if that's a good thing since his wife is just next to him with what appears to be a choke hold on to his neck..  Cool

So that's about it, there's a few more pictures especially the full catalog of the MoMo clubbing event in Penang to publish.. I hope to do it within this week so keep checking in ya!

Hey guys and gals!

This is a bit of a back post of an event just after Christmas..  of course it's just a short glimpse of the pics which after being fully released to the client and his approval will be posted under the work section of our site. So here I present to you the Island Dance Party of 2008 @ Club Momo in Penang..

That night was really unfortunate for me personally as I was unwell (coughing my lungs out, oh by the way, do remember that you'll have to fork out 2x when going to Hospitals for treatment.. mine costs me a cool RM 170+ which didn't cure me in time anyway.. ) So if any of those lovely gals below some how manage to find this site, yeah I know I'm suppose to pass you my contact for the pictures but oopso.. my bad..

So do drop me an email.. and as a security to prevent any pervs from getting these pictures, do let me know what I was wearing that night..

I'll post more pictures of this event at a later date.. as there were pictures of KL DJ's such as SAM Chiko, Sashi Blue, GMix from Aloha and Clare Large from UK.. Till the next time..
